Project Myst

Project Myst is my attempt to model Myst Island in LEGO bricks. For now,
I have to be content with doing so using virtual LEGO bricks, but I hope to
build it in real life someday.

Update 9 November 2003: I finally added some of my preliminary images for the Library.

Clocktower
This is the first building I started in this project. It was also the first building completed, digitally and with actual bricks.
2/5/03 2/6/03
Fixed gear spokes; started adding "water"
2/7/03
Completed version 1 of wind vane. I'm not sure I'm happy with it.
2/8/03
I have to re-do the clock face because my other idea won't work in real life. This is my first draft of a new idea.
2/8/03
I think the Clock Tower is almost done. I just need to finish the inside, and give it a marker switch.
2/8/03
Purely artistic. I did add a bit more "water" around the stepping gears.
2/9/03: 1280x1024 version with new gears added.
2/15/03
I'm just trying out another rendering technique. Also, I've corrected the door so that it now swings out, I've added the 7th stepping gear, and I've added a the clock controls.
2/16/03
I think I finally figured out the levers for inside...
2/16/03
...and here's a shot using the levers.
2/19/03
This picture is using a technique called radiosity.
4/16/03
I tried another render with radiosity... Way too light. Oh well. This is also the first image with my attempt at a marker switch.
4/16/03
The reason there haven't been more updates recently is because I've been working on generating instructions for the clocktower, This is a possible look for those instructions.

4/18/03
Another render of the image posted on the 16th, using different settings.
4/20/03
Normal
4/20/03
With focal blur.
4/20/03
With focal blur and radiosity.
Render time: 10 hours, 47 minutes

Planetarium
After a bit of debate, I decided to start modeling the Planetarium next. It still has a ways to go to digital completion, and I haven't even started collecting the bricks to build it in real life.
realMyst screen shot of interior for reference
2/19/03
This is just my initial shape test for the Planetarium.
2/23/03
Second shape test. I need to keep working on the exact angle and placement of the wall sections, but I think it has promise. The door frame should be interesting...
2/27/03
Testing a pattern for the floor.
2/24/03
...and a view looking in the doorway. I am still not sure how I'm going to do the actual door.

Planetarium Chair - first draft

Planetarium Chair - second draft

3/1/03
Chair in place. I still need to figure out the constelation imager.
3/17/03
I've been slowly working on the roof for the past couple of weeks. Now that I have it on, I've realized that the building needs to be taller.
3/20/03
Ok, it's taller. I think the door is out of proportion now, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do much about it.
